Food Feature | Harlow

Sharing my favorite place on Hawthorne today: Harlow. This is the perfect spot to stop for a filling meal or a delicious smoothie. Everything is fresh, and although you might not notice, it also happens to be vegetarian and gluten-free.

Location: SE Portland, on Hawthorne.

The Space: Harlow has an open space, filled with natural light, communal tables and mis-matched chairs.

Type of food:
 Fresh vegetarian cuisine.

Vegan food options: Almost everything on the menu can be vegan. Even their breakfast scrambles have the option of smokey tempeh or seasoned jackfruit instead of eggs. And yes, the Hawthorne Mac is vegan!

Vegan drink options: The beverage menu at Harlow is huge, and I have so many things I still want to try! They offer coffee and teas, smoothies, fresh juices, health elixers (such as ginger or wheatgrass shots), and cocktails. For milk alternatives, you can choose rice, almond-hemp, coconut or hazelnut. img_2305

My favorites: Any of their bowls are amazing. The ingredients are always so fresh, and the rice and quinoa are cooked perfectly. You get to choose from a number of sauces — I usually go for the curry peanut sauce, but the jalapeño cashew cheese is also mind-blowing. For a lighter meal, I love the Pride of Portland, which is a small rice bowl and a fresh green juice. Yum!

Definitely stop by next time you’re on Hawthorne, and check out their sister site Prasad in the pearl!

My Vegan Journey | From Diet to Lifestyle

Growing up, my family tried to be health conscious. When it was possible, we’d buy organic produce, grass-fed meat, and hormone-free milk. But if you had asked me if I could go vegan back then, I would have said “No way, I love cheeseburgers too much.”

In 2011, my mom convinced the whole family to watch the documentary Forks Over Knives. It details the power of a plant-based diet based on the studies of Dr. Campbell and Dr. Esselstyn.  The documentary debunks myths around protein and dairy, and chronicles several transformations of people switching to plant-based diets. It was super eye-opening and inspiring.

My whole family, including Zachary (my then-boyfriend / now husband), made the switch. We ate a lot of whole grains and starches like brown rice, whole wheat pasta, quinoa, oats and potatoes. We had very little oil or sugar, and tons of fruits and veggies. All of us noticed a jump in our energy.  I felt completely amazing, and others around me noticed it too.10919352_823050841090060_1518960745_n

I was attending a small college and got a lot of comments about my food choices, including, “You need milk for calcium” and “Animals are here on earth so we can eat them.” I did my best to ignore them. At the time, I was afraid to label myself a vegan. Many people reacted strongly to that word, and immediately assumed I was judging them. I would explain that I didn’t eat animal products, but it was only for health reasons. I didn’t want to be associated with those crazy animal-rights activists that everyone seemed so alarmed by.

Around the 10-month mark, I started getting bored with food. We had limited options in the school cafeteria, and I was pretty lazy when it came to cooking. I would whine to my roommates about how much I wanted cheese, and stare longingly when they ate snacks I couldn’t have. My mindset was that this plant-based diet was just that, a “diet.” I was policing my food, thinking of my weight, and not in a good headspace.

After our wedding in 2012, Zach and I started having “cheat days.” We landed in Hawaii for our honeymoon and all I wanted was a big fat burger to celebrate. It quickly spiraled and we were back to eating all our old favorites. And of course, we felt horrible. I was tired, my skin flared up, but none of that mattered because CHEESEBURGERS.

Then came my 21st birthday, the day we adopted Casserole (Cassie) from Pacific Pug Rescue. No joke, she completely changed our life. At first she was timid. She would cower and roll onto her back when we approached her with her leash, which broke my heart. But after a while, she started to trust us. Now she’s got this goofy personality, and all she wants in life is to snuggle. She’s always resting her chin on me, looking into my eyes and asking for a good head scratch.
cassieIt’s hard to explain, but after some time with Cassie, it was hard to differentiate her from other animals. We saw her when she was stressed, fearful, happy and playful. If she could feel all those things, what made her any different than a pig, chicken, or cow? Zachary almost immediately went vegetarian, and I followed (with a little resistance). At least being vegetarian meant I could enjoy cheese! But like most people, I was majorly lactose intolerant. I had to take Lactaid pills with most meals so I wouldn’t get a stomachache. Even though I knew that dairy causes a lot of health problems, I chose to ignore it. I figured I wasn’t hurting anyone but myself.

14487186_796910423785583_1661934837818195968_nThen one day I was on Pinterest when an article about milk popped up. It explained what happens to female cows in the dairy industry. The article was pretty graphic, and I was completely shocked and disgusted. I used to think that milk and cheese was okay, because no one was getting killed or harmed, but I was wrong. The more I researched, the more I realized I had to make a change. Zachary jumped on board and we never looked back.

Round 2 of going vegan has been 100 times easier. I decided to stop limiting oil and sugar and add a lot more variety to my meals. It’s not just some restrictive diet for me anymore, there’s a bigger purpose in mind and it’s actually really freeing! It feels amazing knowing that the choices I make every day cause the least amount of harm to others and the environment. The health benefits that go along with it are just a bonus! I also no longer crave cheese or animal products, because I honestly want nothing to do with them. Plus, it turns out there are tons of vegan cheeses that actually taste amazing. Veganizing my favorite meals is easy, and I’m finding delicious new foods all the time.vegan vibes tee

The more I learn about the vegan lifestyle, the more I love it. There are huge benefits for the planet, health, and animals. I can’t imagine living another way.

Definitely worth stoping by, whether you’ve vegan or not!

The Space: Kiva is a large cafe with a spa and gallery attached. The cafe is bright with natural light, clean, and provides plenty of seating. They also have wifi and outlets if you’re wanting to work (but be warned, it can get a little loud with all the smoothie-blending).

Vegan food options: Almost everything on the menu (besides the grilled cheese) can be vegan. They have rice bowls and sandwiches where you can pick tofu instead of pork, and all of their smoothie bowls are vegan too.

My favorites: For something refreshing, I love the Berry Good Bowl. The smoothie base is açaí, banana, strawberries and orange juice. Then it’s topped with granola, fresh fruit, and coconut. If you’re looking for something savory, I’m completely in love with the Habibi Bowl: Sautéed kale, carrots, cabbage and onions over rice, topped with creamy tahini, hummus and spinach.10665439_388645624625121_1928305451_nIf you’re in Portland and looking for some fresh fare, definitely stop by! For more info on Kiva, you can check out their website here.

Everyday Essentials | What’s in my bag

Happy Friday! I always love reading these “what’s in my bag” posts, so I thought I would make my own. Most of the time my purse is a disaster of receipts and gum wrappers, but I decided to edit down for the sake of a pretty picture.

what's in my bag(I added links to everything I could, in case any of the brands/products interest you. )

Dr. Bronner’s Hand Sanitizer – I love this stuff! I currently have the lavender kind, and it smells amazing!

Alima Pure Pressed Powder in “Aspen” – For touch-ups on-the-go. I definitely recommend any of Alima Pure’s products. They are completely cruelty-free and natural, and extremely high quality.

Lipgloss from Mineral Fusion – If you’re looking for a natural lip gloss, this is a great one!

Chapstick – Dry lips drive me crazy, so I always have chapstick on me. This one is from Badger and although it’s not my favorite scent, it does the job. If you’re looking for THE MOST AMAZING CHAPSTICK EVER, check out this one.

Mini Travel Bag – Just to keep things organized. I usually keep my money and makeup in here so I can find them easier. This bag is from Della, which is a really awesome company that specializes in handcrafted and sustainable styles.

Sunnies – I’m always loosing and/or ruining my sunglasses, so I LOVE these $10 ones from Amazon. Portland isn’t that sunny most of the time, but I like having these around for driving or if I get a migraine.

Punch/gift Cards – Obviously I have some sort of punch card problem. I usually forget I have them and then get another one — at one point I had 4 punch cards from the same place — oops! Here I have cards from Tea Bar, Tea Chai Te, Moberi, Fat Straw, Kiva and Dragonfly Coffee House.

Emotional Ally from Wish Garden Herbs – This is something new I’m trying for my anxiety. It’s an herbal remedy I found at Whole Foods that contains St John’s Wort aerials, Motherwort aerials, Milky Oatseed tops, Passionflower aerials, Scullcap aerials and Spikenard root. It could just be a placebo affect, but I honestly do think it helps! I might follow up and do a full post about it later.

A Snack – Because I hate being hungry! Currently loving these granola bars from 365.

Keys – This might seems like an insignificant item, but it’s actually not. Driving is a huge trigger for my anxiety, but I’ve made a lot of progress this year. I just bought my very own car! I mostly use it for work, but I’m taking things a day at a time and building up confidence. Super thankful to my friends and family who have been supportive and understanding through everything

So there’s a little peek into my life/bag. Thanks for joining!

Everyday Allegra

Blogging is something I’ve always loved. Ask any of my friends or even acquaintances — I’ve tried to turn them all into bloggers! I currently run a Lifestyle Photography Blog to keep my photo portfolio updated, as well as a Senior Portrait Blog, dedicated to my wonderful high school seniors. That might seem like plenty for one person, but recently I’ve been craving a fresh space to get a little more personal.

So here it is! A look into my everyday life. Beyond photography, you’ll see I have a love for holistic living, natural beauty, cozy spaces, and my weird dog Casserole. At my worst, I am struggling with anxiety and acne. At my best, I’m sharing my heart for a vegan lifestyle, and traveling the world with my partner.

Thank you for being here and welcome to everyday allegra.
